New York Artists Made the Red Ribbon So Popular
In 1991, a new project for Visual Aids organized a gallery space in NYC’s East Village to raise awareness. The artists involved would go on to distribute the red ribbons at artsy events. The ribbons would usually come with descriptions, but was later unnecessary as the red ribbon became the insignia of AIDS awareness.
