Founded by Thomas Jefferson, the University of Virginia opened its doors with the purpose of preparing leaders to help form the future of the United States. UVA awards undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 150 fields of study. UVA is home to more than 900 student groups and organizations. Along with historically black fraternities and sororities, UVA hosts many groups geared toward African-American students. The Office of African-American Affairs works to make sure that these students feel welcomed and supported academically and socially on campus. Black Girls Run (BGR) promotes healthy living among African-American women. BGR’s goal is to minimize the number of black women with chronic illnesses due to unhealthy eating and lack of exercise.
